How to turn a PDF into AI flashcards

Start with a unit that has a clear objective: explain mitosis, distinguish two theories or recall vocabulary on one topic. A whole document may mix material you do not need yet. For a long document, select the chapter you plan to study first.

Check that the text is legible. Tables, formulas and scanned pages deserve special attention: incomplete extraction can change the meaning of an answer. Keep the original PDF available to check the result. Use your own material or content you have permission to process.

Sign in, open the AI creation flow and use your PDF as the source. Specify the topic you want to practice and organize the cards in a book with a recognizable name, such as “Biology · Cell division”. Processing options and limits depend on your plan; check them before uploading large documents.

Treat generated cards as a draft to review. AI can miss qualifications, confuse concepts or ask questions that are too broad. Compare each answer with the source, then edit or discard anything that does not help you check understanding. Generating more cards does not mean learning more.

Suppose your notes say: “During mitosis, sister chromatids separate. This distributes genetic material between two daughter cells”. Copying the whole paragraph onto the back of a card makes it difficult to tell which part you recalled.

Separate the learning objectives. Ask: “Which structures separate during mitosis?”. Answer: “Sister chromatids”. On another card, ask: “What is the purpose of that separation?”. Answer: “To distribute genetic material between daughter cells”. Add a comprehension question: “Explain how separation helps distribute genetic material”. Check that explanation against your notes after answering.

Choose a small set and answer before revealing the back. If you cannot recall the answer, return to the PDF and clarify the concept before repeating it. If you know the idea but the question is ambiguous, rewrite the card.

Over the following days, combine due cards with new material. Use spaced repetition to distribute practice and a quiz to find mistakes. Rate a card based on what you recalled before revealing it, rather than how familiar it looks afterwards. For numerical problems or essays, include practice in the actual exam format.

If every answer is long, split the topic into smaller questions. If a fact does not appear in the PDF, remove it or verify it with a reliable source. When a question depends on a diagram, provide the necessary context or study the diagram directly.

Do not measure progress only by card count. Check whether you can explain the topic and solve unfamiliar questions. A small book of clear cards can be easier to manage than hundreds of repetitive questions.
