Decide what you want to do with a word
When studying vocabulary with flashcards, first define the task: understanding a word while reading, recalling it for writing, or using it while speaking. A card can test one of these without testing the others. Rather than collecting translations indefinitely, prepare a few questions linked to real situations in your course or daily life.
We will use the English contrast between borrow and lend. The objective is to describe who temporarily gives an object and who receives it. You can adapt the structure to another language, but the examples and lexical references must change. Do not assume that different languages organize meanings or sentence patterns in the same way.
What research on vocabulary cards contributes
Lei and Reynoldsâ 2022 synthesis reviewed 32 studies of cards for English vocabulary. Receptive knowledge was assessed more often than productive knowledge, while form and meaning were assessed more often than use. This matters when interpreting findings: recognizing a word on a test does not automatically demonstrate using it in conversation.
Check the objective of each card accordingly. If you always see the English word and choose a translation, add another task when your aim is to produce it. Translation cards are not therefore useless; you need to complete the sequence with the task you intend to perform. The examples below are practical proposals, not a replication of a study protocol.
Prepare a small, verified entry
Choose words from a text, lesson, or conversation you want to understand. Retain a source sentence and consult a suitable learnerâs dictionary. Check the specific meaning, part of speech, and a common construction where appropriate. Avoid copying every dictionary sense into the same answer. One card should have a clear target you can assess.
Cambridge English Grammar Today distinguishes lend, from the temporary giverâs perspective, from borrow, from the receiverâs perspective. Our original situation is Ana temporarily giving Luis her calculator. Ana lends her calculator to Luis; Luis borrows the calculator from Ana. Both sentences describe the same event from different subjectsâ viewpoints.
Separate recognition, production, and contextual choice
A first card can show âLuis borrows the calculator from Anaâ and ask who receives the object. A second can describe the situation in your first language and ask for an English sentence from Luisâs perspective. The first tests interpretation; the second requires producing a sentence. Keep the criteria separate so you know which task you can perform.
For a third card, provide an incomplete sentence and an explicit instruction: âComplete with borrow or lend: Ana can ___ her calculator to Luis.â The intended answer is lend. Restricting the options avoids rejecting a valid alternative outside the exerciseâs focus. If you ask an open question, accept equivalent correct formulations.
- Interpretation: identify the meaning in a specific sentence.
- Production: retrieve the word and build a sentence without seeing it.
- Contrast: choose between two forms you confuse and explain your decision.
Use context to clarify without giving away the answer
Context should identify the situation without reducing the task to a trivial guessing game. If every borrow card mentions Luis and every lend card mentions Ana, you may learn the name instead of the relationship. Change people and objects, and alternate the giver and receiver. Keep the same correction rule across those variations.
Avoid blanks that cannot be scored fairly: âI ___ a bookâ allows many verbs. Add the intended meaning and contrast, or request a complete sentence expressing a defined situation. For a fixed expression, check usage in a reliable source. Do not assume that changing one preposition leaves the meaning intact. A shorter prompt is only better when it remains clear.
Use AI for variations with a specific checking routine
You can ask an assistant: âUsing these two verified entries, propose four short situations that distinguish borrow and lend. Keep answers separate, preserve the meaning, and flag any situation with more than one solution.â Check who performs the action, who receives the object, and whether the sentences actually express the intended situation.
A generated sentence can sound fluent while using an unnatural combination. Verify constructions in a dictionary, course materials, or with an instructor. If you cannot check an answer, mark it pending and study the others. You do not need a hundred variations to decide whether a draft is useful; inspect a small sample before creating a large set.
Use Lumia for the cards and practice beyond the deck
Lumia AI lets you create and edit questions and answers, organize them into books, and rate reviews, as its documentation describes. You can write the exercises above as text cards. They do not require a special gap-fill card type or an automatic grader covering every possible sentence. Check the content before beginning practice.
Then write or say a new sentence about a different object without opening the cards. For listening comprehension, also use audio from a reliable source and check what you understood. For conversation, add real or guided interaction. This guide does not attribute automatic pronunciation or fluency assessment to Lumia. Choose the extra task from your actual learning objective.
Correct the specific difficulty and manage the workload
If you understand the sentence but cannot write it, retain receptive practice and add production attempts. If you choose the correct verb but miss the construction, work on that combination separately. If even the meaning is missing, reduce the batch and return to a concrete situation. Repeating an entire deck without classifying errors makes the next adjustment harder to choose.
In another session, review the cards and create a sentence with a different subject. Record what you could do unaided and what required a hint. Remove duplicates and avoid collecting every unfamiliar word from a reading passage; prioritize words needed for your goal. A longer list describes accumulated material. A correctly formed new sentence provides evidence of the use you intended to practice.
