Choose the exam before organizing your preparation
To prepare for a B1 or B2 English exam, confirm the qualification you need and practice reading, listening, writing, and speaking through tasks from that exam. Use CEFR descriptors to set goals, obtain feedback, and review official samples; a proficiency level alone does not specify the format you will take.
Start with the organization requesting the result, whether that is a university, employer, or training provider. Check which qualification it accepts, then consult the exam provider for tasks, timing, criteria, and conditions. Exams associated with the same level may still require different preparation. Create a working record containing the exact exam name, the requirement you must meet, and the official resources available for each part. That makes your practice relevant before you invest in a full set of materials.
Turn B1 and B2 descriptors into observable goals
The Council of Europe places B1 and B2 within independent language use. Broadly, B1 covers following clear communication on familiar subjects and connecting simple ideas in a text. B2 extends to handling more demanding material and developing a reasoned position. These descriptors help set learning goals, but they are not an exam score or a substitute for a provider's assessment criteria.
Use available official samples to check each skill separately. Understanding an article does not necessarily show that you can organize a spoken response to it. Write an observable target, such as following an argument in a recording, comparing proposals in writing, or answering an unexpected follow-up question. Avoid defining your entire level by the number of vocabulary items you recognize. A useful goal describes something you can attempt and review.
Practice reading and listening for meaning
For reading, attempt a task without a dictionary and locate the evidence supporting your answer. During review, identify expressions that prevented you from understanding the relationship between ideas. In this original example, a notice says a workshop's venue is unchanged but its starting time has moved. Knowing most of the words is insufficient if you confuse what changed with what stayed the same. Explain both before checking the key.
For listening, make the first attempt under your chosen exam's conditions. During review, return to the relevant passage and use the official transcript if one is provided. Distinguish an unfamiliar expression from a known word you failed to recognize in speech or a missed negative. Those difficulties call for different follow-up work. Listening while reading can support review; afterward, check what you understand when the transcript is no longer available.
Build vocabulary cards that preserve the situation
Lei and Reynolds (2022) synthesize studies of vocabulary learning with word cards. The studies used different designs and word-knowledge measures; the synthesis analyzes immediate test results rather than establishing long-term retention. It therefore does not show that memorizing cards is sufficient for B2 certification, or that a particular review count guarantees an exam outcome.
For an original practice card, use “The session was called off because the room was unavailable” and ask what happened to the session. The answer should preserve cancellation rather than delay. Add a new sentence about an outdoor event, then make a separate prompt requiring you to produce the expression from a situation. Verify meaning and use with a reliable reference. Recognizing an expression and producing it independently are different checks, so practice both and return to complete texts.
Write, obtain focused feedback, and revise
Select a task in the official format and write a complete response before opening a worked model. Check whether you address every requested point, use an appropriate tone for the reader, and connect ideas clearly. Apply the provider's published criteria. Accurate sentences about a different topic can still leave the assigned task unanswered, so review the relationship between the prompt and your response first.
As an original exercise, email a community center to suggest a language exchange: describe the intended participants, propose an activity, and ask about room availability. Request feedback from a teacher on one clarity problem and one language issue. Revise and retain both versions. If you consult AI, check its corrections against reliable references and make sure it preserves your intended meaning. A polished version you cannot explain gives limited evidence about your independent writing.
Practice speaking with unfamiliar follow-up questions
Choose an oral task relevant to your exam, record an attempt if possible, and listen for whether you actually answer the question. Focus on clarity, organization, and supporting examples before trying to fix every detail at once. Ask someone qualified to assess the language for specific feedback, then attempt a comparable task under the conditions you need to rehearse.
For an original exercise, explain whether a college should provide a shared room for student projects. Give a reason and an example, then respond when a partner asks how you would handle competing bookings. An unfamiliar follow-up tests whether you can adapt your argument rather than recite a prepared speech. Practice asking for clarification and rephrasing ideas within relevant tasks. Memorized language is less informative if the response ignores what the other speaker just asked.
Use official simulations to choose the next practice block
Look for official samples or practice tests from your chosen provider. Follow their timing, instructions, and permitted tools. Use an answer key where available and seek assessment of writing or speaking against the relevant criteria. Do not treat a practice result as a qualification or invent score conversions between different exams. Keep your observed difficulties available when planning the next session.
- Identify the skill and task behind the difficulty instead of summarizing everything as weak English.
- Choose a specific correction, such as a meaning relationship, an organization problem, or an expression you did not recognize.
- Practice the correction with different material in a later session before repeating a familiar sample test.
- Keep tasks from all four skills in the plan even when one needs additional attention this week.
- Check what you can complete independently and ask the provider about unresolved questions concerning the actual assessment process.
Support vocabulary review and questions with Lumia AI
Lumia AI lets you create or edit flashcards and generate cards and quizzes with AI from notes or PDFs. Organize vocabulary into books and use spaced repetition based on your review ratings. Check generated sentences, answers, and conditions of use before studying them. Keep a reliable reference available when an expression has several meanings or a proposed example seems unclear.
The chat tutor can help you explore a focused question or explanation, which also needs verification. Continue with complete reading, listening, writing, and conversation tasks, obtaining appropriate feedback on production. Choose the next session from an observed difficulty, then return to the official format to check whether the correction helps you respond to that particular task independently.
